Hit the Road Jack! A BFOC Group History Ride of Ray Charles’ South Dallas

September 30th, 2011 § 4 Comments

In the 1950′s, South Dallas’s BonTon neighborhood was the site of turmoil and perseverance. Earlier in the decade, ten area homes were bombed as the civil rights movement was beginning to gain momentum. By the mid-50′s the area would become one of the nation’s most hopping R&B spots. At its zenith, the legendary Ray Charles moved to a small house on Eugene Street where his living room became the impromptu gathering spot for community jam sessions with major players like David “Fathead” Newman, Leroy Cooper, and James Clay.

Jason Roberts will lead another historic group ride through the neighborhood spotlighting sites of the 1951 bombings, the homes of Ray Charles and Fathead Newman, and the historic Woodman club. The ride will continue across the Cedar Crest bridge where Team Better Block will hold a “Better Bridge” demonstration, with half the bridge being set aside for pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. The ride will culminate at the Blues, Bandits, and BBQ event in Lake Cliff Park where live music, BBQ, and activities will take place throughout the park.

The ride will start in Main Street Garden Park in Downtown Dallas at 10AM on Saturday, October 22nd. The rides are leisurely paced, and family friendly. We’ll return to Main Street Garden Park at 1PM.

Help us connect the Trinity Trail!

September 27th, 2011 § 2 Comments

North and South Dallas will be united on October 23rd with the community built Trinity Trail project that began this summer. The City of Dallas, the Trinity Trust, DORBA, Groundwork Dallas, the Trinity Strand and Team Better Block are asking for you to join our effort. With over nine miles of off-road trail already completed it is time to connect the Trinity with the Katy Trail and Bishop Arts District. The on-street bicycle facilities are set to be the first of our modern bicycle system plan. We have found the most expedited and efficient way for this connection to be made is with community funding. The Dallas Parks Foundation Fund under the Dallas Foundation has agreed to collect the funds for the project and the City of Dallas will direct efforts on the ground with construction crews to begin striping the streets within weeks. Our goal is to raise $75K in 20 days! Help us as we connect the North and South with trails, bridges, parks and people. The names of all donors will be added to a plaque that will be installed at one of the trail heads.

We’re accepting donations of any amount online here. Please note “Trinity Trail Project” within the comments section.

Checks should be made payable to Dallas Parks Foundation and mailed to the following address: 381 Casa Linda Plaza, LB117, Dallas, Texas 75218 – Memo line: Trinity Trail Project (TTP).

Everyone who gives will receive a letter from The Dallas Foundation. This letter is your receipt and should be retained for tax records. 100% of your contribution is tax deductible.

The Trinity Trail is ahead of its time and your contribution will help us complete this historic link.  Please donate today.

Cyclesomatic 2011

October 7th – 29th

One wheel, two wheel, three wheel, more!  Dust off that saddle, shine up that chrome, strap on your helmet, and wheel on over to a month long celebration of the best fun you’ll have all year on a bicycle!

Cyclesomatic 2011, our nod to the wonderfully simple bicycle, takes place from October 7th – 29th and is filled with over 10 different bicycling events that will guarantee you a good time.

This year’s events include several different group rides around town.  One will take you to the lake for the weekend, one will take you to City Hall, yet another will show you the best Oak Cliff homes have to offer, another will ask you to hunt and snap photos, and even another will show you Dallas history you didn’t even know existed!

Our showcase event will be a demonstration of the best that bicycles have to offer in North Texas, including a BMX half-pipe, bicycle art and crafts, a kids safety course, and 3 different kinds of bicycle races including one in Alley’s, one with palleta carts, and even one that doesn’t go anywhere, as well as much, much more!.  All of this and an exhibition of bicycling inspired organizations, businesses and what our governments are doing to enhance bicycling in our North Texas cities.  You will not be let down!

Furthermore, we’ve got a two feature Bike-In Movie planned, an introduction of  a new trail unveil like no other within the Trinity River Corridor, and a new Cyclecross race that will spook you and the competitors off their saddles.

We’re constantly updating the schedule details on our website, so please keep checking back so you have the most recent information.
