BFOC’s brother-in-arms, BikeDenton, reported their first successful Denim Ride! This was all the more incredible given the rainy weather. Check out the slideshow from Danny Fulgencio at the Dallas Observer.
As a side note, BFOC hopes to do a story on the bike movement happening in Denton soon. Howard Draper, longtime friend of BFOC as well as noted area musician who’s manned the helm in such notable indie bands like Okkervil River, and Shearwater, is leading the charge in the advocacy movement. He’s recently been assigned to the city’s transportation committee, and is actively working with UNT’s administration to revive Denton’s bike plan with a major focus on bicycle infrastructure. Expect major changes in the not too distant future.
Also, we’ll be announcing a giant joint BFOC/BD “bicycle sound installation” at NX35 soon…stay tuned!
Bicycle Framebuilding Discussion Announced
January 22nd, 2010 § 5 Comments

Come join us for a casual discussion with Tim, from Massengill frames, and Glenn, from Daltex Handmade Bicycles. Topics will range from framebuilding, design, materials, as well as the path these guys took to learn the craft of framebuilding. The lecture will be held at noon on Sunday, February 21st, at the autoshop class beside Adamson High School (201 E 9th St, Dallas, TX 75203). The shop teacher, Kenny Cotten, also work closely with YBS bikes.
This is a first part of a potential class series we mentioned developing in December. We’re still fleshing out exactly how that will look, as the logistics and response were greater than we first anticipated. This discussion will introduce several of the area builders, review their methods and how they go about their craft, and help others get started. We also hope to gauge how to best move forward in the direction of a full class series, with the ultimate goal of developing a bike building culture throughout DFW.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend, and if we have more than 20 sign up for this initial course, we’ll look to find a larger location and possibly fill a second date.
Observer article about “Bikos” making Oak Cliff into the new Austin

Jim Schutze wrote a great article about our efforts to bring community gardens, bicycling awareness, and more to North Oak Cliff. Our own, Mariana Griggs, is spotlighted as she bicycles around the OC discussing all of the work taking place by the community. The article hits the nail on the head when it comes to our approach…we’ve long been overlooked by City Hall, so the neighborhood has stood up and rolled their sleeves up to make change on our own. From the community gardens, mural projects, bicycle awareness, revival of old theatres, cleaning up Fort Worth Avenue, returning the streetcars, and beautifying medians, all of the work taking place has been from people simply getting out and organizing and making our piece of Dallas the most livable neighborhood we can.

The Dallas Morning News wrote about our coordinated groups’ efforts to turn seventh into a bicycle/pedestrian friendly corridor connecting the neighborhood with the Bishop Arts District. One of the initiatives we’re helping with is the Seventh Street Mural Project to beautify several of the back walls of buildings that face the street. Local artists and BFOCer’s, Kevin Obregon, Vanessa Neil, and Steve Cruz are gathering the artists, and we’ll announce the unveiling in April…just in time for the Second Annual Oak Cliff Art Crawl.
More to come!
Mardi Gras Parade Ride
January 19th, 2010 § 4 Comments
You’re invited to ride with Bike Friendly Oak Cliff in the second-annual Oak Cliff Mardi Gras Parade.
The 1.2-mile parade ride will travel down North Bishop Ave. and through the Bishop Arts District. Meet us at the corner of Canty and Bishop (where the block party with the teepee was last year) at 1 p.m. Stop by early to grab a Hamburger Man burger if you’re hungry. You might even find a keg or two somewhere around there. We’ll ride as a group to our placement in the parade. The parade starts promptly at 2 p.m. and will be over by 3 p.m., which gives you PLENTLY of time to even hang out at the after party at Canty and Bishop and go to a Super Bowl party.
Like last year, we encourage everyone to wear tons of orange and/or use orange decorations since it’s our official group/logo color. What else to wear? B.F.O.C. shirts if you have them! Or dress gaudy: Wear party hats/masks or in your own weird interpretation of voodoo/witchdoctor/botanica. Everyone should bring some beads to throw at the people lining the streets of this packed and completely cute neighborhood party.

Love Your Lane | Valentine’s Day Ride
January 18th, 2010 § 14 Comments
You’re invited to Love Your Lane, the first B.F.O.C. group ride of the year on Valentine’s Day. Bring your sweetie, or come looking for that special cycling someone, and we’ll all tour around town at a leisurely pace.
If you’re in the mood for love, dress up (cupid, cherub, black widow, love bug, a kissing booth, Eliot Spitzer, Queen of Hearts, a Care Bear, blah, blah, blah, zzzz…) and decorate your bike. This is encouraged but NOT REQUIRED to ride. It’s going to be chilly and it might snow (!!!), so get cozy.
Prizes for the best dressed-include: Treats from Oak Cliff’s Dude, Sweet Chocolate, and a one-of-a-kind Valentine-centric B.F.O.C. T-shirt.
Lets hook up at Main Street Garden Park at 2 p.m., cruise through downtown to Cedar Springs, down Turtle Creek Blvd., and over to Uptown where we’ll make a stop at The Ginger Man before heading back to our nice new “Park” park downtown.
